Maggiore Lake
The Maggiore Lake (or Verbano) is one of the main alpine lakes, the second Italian lake for extension, after lake Garda. The lake is divided among Lombardy, Piedmont ( provinces of Novara and Verbano-Cusio-Ossola) and Switzerland, in the northern side. The main tributaries of Maggiore Lake are the Ticino, the Maggia, the Toce and the Tresa.
The origin of the Maggiore Lake is surely glacial, its hills formed by morainic deposits (common characteristic also to the other pre-alpines lakes), its lengthened form (66 Kms of length), the U-profile of the banks, the depth (around 175 ms) testify this origin.
In the past it had been a natural transit toward central Europe, during the centuries it was theater of clashes between men and civilization, in fact this zone was inhabited since the ancient times. Meaningful it is also the presence of imposing fortresses found in the zone. The Maggiore Lake is a landscape full of historical and artistic testimonies, splendid buildings and enchanting gardens can be seen particularly in the Borromeo gulf, characterized by a very rich vegetation and by an ideal climate. The lombard side is countersigned instead by the presence of sweets hills that, degrading down to the shore, they are turned into sandy beaches and rocky walls.
